Julia Jacquette
Julia Jacquette is an American artist based in New York City and Amsterdam. Known for her series of hyperreal paintings that address power and imagery found in advertising, Julia also recently completed a graphic memoir on her childhood in New York City entitled, Playground of My Mind. Her work was recently the subject of a retrospective exhibition entitled, Unrequited Acts of Play at at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College (February 18 - July 2nd, 2018) and the Visual Art Center of New Jersey in Summit, NJ, (September 22nd, 2017 - January 14th, 2018).
Jacquette’s work has been shown extensively at galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and The RISD Museum among other institutions. She has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, Princeton University, and is currently on the faculty at the Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC).

Event Summary
With their meticulous brushwork and keen observation, Julia’s paintings explore the uneasy marriage of longing and anxiety radiating from the imagery that surrounds us — from advertisements for furniture and food to glossy fashion magazines. Julia’s treatment of these images, often in extreme close up, distills the qualities that draw us in - the shine of perfect hair, the warm glow of a glass of scotch - and yet turn out to be ephemeral, exposing the manner by which images draw us in and manipulate us.
